Here at United Dock Diving, we’re passionate about this exciting and fast-growing sport—and we’re here to introduce you to everything you need to know about it!

What is Dock Diving?

Dock diving is a sport in which dogs jump off a dock into a body of water, usually chasing a toy or retrieving an object thrown by their handler. The goal is to cover the greatest possible distance or to catch the object in mid-air before hitting the water. Dogs are judged based on how far or how high they jump, with the distance usually being the key measurement. The sport tests a dog’s athleticism, drive, and ability to perform under pressure—plus, it’s a blast for both dog and handler!

Why is Dock Diving So Popular?

There’s a reason why dock diving has become one of the most exciting canine sports in recent years. Here’s why:

  1. High Energy Fun
Dock diving is a high-energy activity that allows your dog to use their natural instincts and abilities. From the thrill of launching off the dock to the joy of swimming in the water, it’s an experience that taps into your dog’s innate love for play and adventure.

  2. Great for All Breeds
While some breeds may excel at dock diving, any dog can participate, from small breeds to large ones. Whether your dog is a Labrador Retriever, a Border Collie, or a mixed breed, they can thrive in dock diving. In fact, some of the most successful dock diving dogs are unexpected candidates, showing that passion and drive are more important than breed!

  3. Bonding Time with Your Dog
Dock diving isn’t just about the sport—it’s a way to deepen the bond between you and your dog. Working together, learning new things, and celebrating each jump can strengthen your relationship. It’s a shared experience that’s rewarding for both of you!

  4. Perfect for Water Lovers
If your dog loves swimming and the water, dock diving is an ideal outlet for their energy. The cool, refreshing water gives them the perfect chance to cool down while doing something fun and physically challenging. Plus, it’s a great way for dogs to get their exercise while avoiding the wear and tear of traditional fetch games.

How Do You Get Started in Dock Diving?

Getting into dock diving doesn’t require a lot of special equipment—just a dog, a dock, and a body of water! However, if you want to make the most of the experience, here’s how you can get started:

  1. Find a Local Dock Diving Event or Club
There are many clubs and facilities that offer opportunities to try out dock diving with United Dock Diving. Look for a local event, workshop, or training session where you can get some hands-on experience and see if your dog enjoys the sport. Check out our facility list to see if there’s any UDD facilities local to you!

  2. Train for Success
While dock diving is natural for many dogs, it’s still a skill that can be developed. Start with teaching your dog basic commands such as “sit” and “stay,” and introduce them to the dock in a relaxed and playful manner. The goal is to make your dog feel comfortable and confident jumping off the dock.

  3. Start Small
At first, you may want to start with the ramp help your dog get used to jumping into water. Gradually move to the big dock, and increase the length of the dock your dog has to run as your dog becomes more confident. Remember, patience is key!

  4. Choose the Right Toy
Many dogs love dock diving because it involves chasing after a favorite toy, such as a bumper or ball. Make sure to choose a toy that floats well in the water and is easy for your dog to grab. You can even use different toys for different training sessions to keep things fresh and exciting.

Competing in Dock Diving

Once your dog gets the hang of the basics, you may want to enter a competition! Dock diving competitions typically involve several different events, including:

  • Long Jump: The most common competition event, where dogs jump as far as they can off the dock into the water. The dog is measured from the end of the dock to where the base of the tail lands in the water.

  • High Jump: This event challenges dogs to jump as high as possible to grab a bumper.

  • Speed Jump: In this event, dogs race to retrieve a toy thrown into the water as quickly as possible.

  • Hang Time: This game is similar to High Jump, except the bumper moves out over the water instead of up!

Competitions are a fun way to showcase your dog’s skills, meet fellow enthusiasts, and enjoy the thrill of the sport in a more structured setting.
